During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), Swarbhanu disguised himself and sat among the gods to secretly drink the nectar of immortality. When Lord Vishnu discovered his deception, he used his Sudarshan Chakra to sever Swarbhanu’s head from his body to prevent him from becoming immortal. However, since Swarbhanu had already tasted the nectar, he became immortal. The upper part of his body became Rahu, and the lower part became Ketu. It is believed that Rahu’s severed head fell at this very site in Pauri, where the temple now stands, making it a sacred place known as the Rahu Mandir.
Devotees believe that visiting this temple and performing rituals here helps in overcoming Rahu-related doshas. Special prayers and ceremonies are performed here to seek relief from Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and the effects of Rahu Mahadasha.
According to one legend, this temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya Ji, while another belief suggests that the Pandavas constructed it during their Swargarohini Yatra (journey to heaven). It is said that they worshipped Lord Shiva and Rahu Dev here to seek protection from Rahu Dosha.
