The genre traces its origin to a single verse in the Balakanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. The full composition consists of four parts, totalling 70 stanzas. The Suprabhatam gained immense global popularity through the iconic recording by the legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi in 1958.
