The Vel is considered a symbol of divine energy that eliminates negativity and removes obstacles. As per the Skanda Purana, the Vel represents Lord Muruga’s might and compassion, ensuring protection for those who seek refuge in him. Initially, plans were made to construct a temple near the existing Lord Murugan temple in Pazhani. However, it was eventually decided to build the temple in Salem. On August 26, 1946, the foundation for the temple was laid, marking the beginning of its construction.
The temple was completed on January 23, 1961, and consecrated as the Sri Kavadi Pazhani Andavar Temple. Alongside the main sanctum, shrines for the Navagrahas (nine celestial deities) and other sacred spaces were added, and the Kumbabhishekam (sacred consecration ceremony) was performed. On February 1, 1971, the temple further expanded with the construction of the majestic Raja Gopuram (royal tower) and shrines for Goddess Kali, the Sun, and Moon gods. This temple is also revered as the 9th Padai Veedu (sacred abode) of Lord Murugan, making it a significant site of worship for devotees.
