Learn the divine story of Jyeshtha Amavasya Fast, when devotees offer prayers to forefathers, perform holy rituals, and seek peace, prosperity, and karmic relief through devotion and fasting.
In a kingdom, there lived a poor Brahmin whose daughter couldn’t get married due to financial hardships. Distraught, the Brahmin couple approached a sage for advice. The sage informed them of a washerwoman (Dhobin) in a nearby village who lived with her son and daughter-in-law. The sage advised that if the Brahmin’s daughter served this washerwoman, she would be pleased and grant her some vermillion (sindoor) from her forehead, ensuring the girl’s marriage. Taking the sage's advice, the Brahmin's daughter secretly began doing all the household chores at the washerwoman’s house without their knowledge. One day, the Dhobin asked her daughter-in-law how she managed to complete all the work so quickly. The daughter-in-law replied that she assumed the Dhobin herself was doing the tasks. Curious, the Dhobin started observing the house and discovered the girl quietly doing all the work. She asked the girl why she was helping. The Brahmin’s daughter explained the sage’s guidance. Moved by the girl’s sincerity, the Dhobin granted her the vermillion from her forehead. However, at the same moment, her husband passed away. Devastated, the Brahmin’s daughter left the house and went to a Peepal tree. She gathered 108 pieces of brick, circumambulated the tree 108 times, and began throwing the bricks one by one. Miraculously, this act revived the Dhobin’s husband. The circumambulation of the Peepal tree brought the girl immense blessings, emphasizing the spiritual significance of the ritual.
