Kartik Amavasya Story

Learn the divine story of Kartik Amavasya, a spiritually important day that marks the victory of light over darkness, associated with Diwali celebrations and the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Yama.

Kartik Amavasya Story in English

According to the Hindu calendar, the month of Kartik is considered very special as major festivals like Diwali occur during this time. On the night of Kartik Amavasya (new moon), various tales related to Diwali are told. Among them is a famous story about Kartik Amavasya. One Kartik Amavasya night, Goddess Lakshmi wandered on Earth. Due to the deep darkness, she lost her way. While walking, she spotted a distant light and moved closer to it. She arrived at a hut where an elderly woman had lit lamps outside and left her door open. Goddess Lakshmi approached the woman and said, “I am lost in this darkness. Can I stay at your place for the night?” The elderly woman warmly welcomed Goddess Lakshmi, saying, “You are my guest. Please feel at ease here while I prepare food and bedding for you.” Seeing the woman’s hospitality and devotion, Lakshmi decided to rest there. The woman took great care of her guest and treated her with love and respect. That night, Lakshmi stayed and slept in the humble hut. Impressed by the woman’s service and dedication, Goddess Lakshmi blessed her abundantly. When the woman awoke the next day, she found her simple hut transformed into a magnificent palace filled with wealth, grains, and luxury. She was astonished at the miraculous change. Later, Goddess Lakshmi revealed herself to the elderly woman and explained that she had come to her house after losing her way on Kartik Amavasya. Lakshmi expressed delight in her hospitality and promised that anyone lighting lamps on Kartik Amavasya would always receive her blessings. She assured that those who illuminate their homes with light would be rewarded with prosperity. From then on, the tradition of celebrating Diwali with lamps and worshipping Goddess Lakshmi began. People welcome Lakshmi into their homes, workplaces, and places of business by keeping their doors open and performing rituals. It is believed that wherever lamps are lit and light is spread, Goddess Lakshmi visits and ensures there is no lack of wealth or prosperity.
