Learn the divine story of Guru Purnima Fast, where devotees pay tribute to their gurus and seek wisdom, blessings, and spiritual enlightenment through prayers and rituals.
The story of Guru Purnima is related to the birth of Vedvyasa, the great scholar and creator of many ancient texts, including the Puranas. Vedvyasa was the son of Sage Parashar and Satyavati. His birth is connected to an interesting story. During ancient times, Sage Parashar reached the Yamuna River during a pilgrimage. He requested a fisherman to help him cross the river. The fisherman asked his daughter, Matsyagandha, to ferry the sage across. While crossing the river, Sage Parashar was mesmerized by Matsyagandha's beauty and touched her hand. Understanding his intention, Matsyagandha hesitated, feeling unworthy as she belonged to a lower caste and was not considered beautiful. However, Parashar explained that divine will had brought them together and transformed her into a radiant and fragrant young woman. Matsyagandha requested him to wait until evening for their union, as daytime was considered inappropriate. Using his powers, Parashar created darkness all around. Matsyagandha worried about the consequences of becoming pregnant and the societal judgment she would face. Sage Parashar blessed her with the name Satyavati and promised she would gain fame and respect in all directions. He also assured her that their child would be exceptionally talented and known across all worlds for dividing the Vedas and writing the Puranas. From their union, Vedvyasa was born, and he accomplished many remarkable tasks during his lifetime. This story is integral to Guru Purnima, a day dedicated to honoring teachers and sages.
