Varahi Devi Temple

One of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India.

Manaskhand, Uttarakhand, India

Varahi Temple is located approximately 60 kilometres from the city of Lohaghat in the state of Uttarakhand, India. This temple dedicated to Goddess Varahi, also known as Maan Varahi, is situated at an altitude of around 1850 metres above sea level. It is also known as Devi Dhura in the local region. The Maan Varahi Temple in Devi Dhura is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India. The temple of Maan Varahi in Devi Dhura is the centre of unwavering faith. Varahi Devi Temple is a sacred place for devotees and worshipers of Shakti.

History of the temple

During the rule of the Chand Kings, idols of 'Champa Devi' and 'Lal Jeebh Wali Mahakali' were consecrated in this Shakti Peeth. Regular sacrifices began to be offered to Mahakali every year. It is said that the idol of Varahi was originally established in a building in the midst of dense forests by the Katyuri Kings during the invasion of the Ruhi dynasty. Gradually, villages settled around it, and this temple became the centre of people's faith. According to the mythological beliefs associated with this temple, Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, was one of the daughters of Brahma. She married Lord Shiva, despite her father Daksha's dislike for Shiva. To humiliate Shiva, Daksha organised a grand yagna and invited all the deities and sages except Shiva. Sati decided to visit her father to inquire about the reason for not inviting Shiva. When she reached her father's palace, an insult was directed towards Shiva. Unable to bear any humiliation of her husband, Sati immolated herself in the yagna fire. When Shiva's followers informed him about Sati's death, he became furious and began the dance of destruction (Tandava). To save the universe and restore Shiva's sanctity, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati's lifeless body into 51 pieces. The body parts of Sati fell at various places, and the spot where one of her body parts fell is believed to be the location of this Shakti Peeth.

Significance of the temple

It is believed that the idol of Goddess Varahi cannot be seen with open eyes because the brilliance of the idol can blind the eyes. Therefore, the idol is kept covered in Tamrapatra (copper plate). Goddess Varahi fulfills the wishes of her devotees.

Architecture of the temple

This temple, situated on a high platform of more than 7 feet in height, is a simple structure. Six staircases have been built for the construction of the temple. There is an entrance door divided into two parts. Above the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there is a simple Shankhwa-Kaar (conch-shaped) minaret. In front of the sanctum sanctorum, there is a veranda with three arches in the North Indian style. A two-story building has also been constructed next to the temple for the accommodation of devotees. The temple is surrounded by dense forests and lush greenery.
