Tulsi Manas Temple

The auspicious place where the Ramcharitmanas was written!

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, there is a small temple dedicated to Tulsi Mata. It was constructed in 1964 by the Kolkata-based businessman Seth Ratanlal Sureka. The inauguration of the temple was done by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Ramcharitmanas, the holy epic of Ramayana, is recited herein in melodious tones. The temple houses idols of Lord Rama, Mother Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. Additionally, there is a temple dedicated to Mata Annapurna and Lord Shiva and another one for Lord Satyanarayana.

History of the temple

Among the Varanasi temples, Tulsi Manas Temple holds historical and cultural significance in Hinduism. This is because, in the 16th century, the Hindu poet and saint Goswami Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas at this very place. Ramayana, a distinguished epic in Hinduism, was originally written in Sanskrit by Valmiki, approximately between 500 BCE and 100 BCE. As the original Ramayana in Sanskrit was difficult for common people to understand, Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas in simple Hindi.

Significance of the temple

Tulsi Manas Mandir holds immense religious and cultural importance in Hinduism because Saint Goswami Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas at this very place. Ramcharitmanas is inscribed on the entire wall of the temple, and the recitation of Ramayana continues continuously in the temple.

Architecture of the temple

This temple is constructed in the Hindu architectural style with complete Sangemarmar (marble) material. In the centre of the temple, there are idols of Lord Rama, Mata Janaki, and Lakshmana. On one side are Lord Satyanarayana and Mata Annapurna, and on the other side is Lord Shiva. A special feature of this temple is that the entire Ramcharitmanas is inscribed on the temple walls with beautiful carvings in marble. On the second floor of the temple, there is a statue of Saint Tulsidas. Tulsi Manas Mandir celebrates Ram Navami, Annapurna Puja, and Krishna Janmashtami festivals with great fervour. The first floor of the temple has a library with rare copies of the Ramayana in various languages.
