According to Puranic mythology, the coronation ceremony of Lord Ram, the king of Ayodhya, was attended by all Gods and Goddesses. This event was also graced by Lord Surya, the Sun God who stayed for a month at a place close to Darshan Nagar, which is known today as the Surya Kund Temple. The present structure of the kund was constructed by the Shakdwipiya Brahmin King Shree Darshan Singh during the early years of the 19th century. Motivated by his belief that the kund contained holy waters, he performed a 7-day-long penance here. On the seventh day, he was guided by an oracle (Akashvani) to dig up the spot, which unearthed an idol of Lord Surya with a chariot run by 7 horses, a Shivling and a great amount of wealth. The king used the money to build the kund and the temple.

It is believed that a dip in the holy kund followed by an ardhya offered to Lord Surya frees the devotees of all their problems and grants all their wishes. A chronicled tale tells the story of King Ghosh, who was blessed with a disease-free and divine body when he bathed in this kund. Since then, it is said that the waters of the kund cure skin diseases and bless people with a healthy body. The temple witnesses the maximum crowd in January, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Constructed as per the Hindu style of temple architecture, this heavenly abode has a tapering peak. Right below this peak lies the statue of Lord Surya, together with the Ashtadhatu-made idols of his children, Lord Shanidev and Goddess Yamuna. Adding to its spiritual aura, the temple also houses statues of Ram-Sita, Shiv Parivar, Lord Hanuman and Shaligram.

Offerings of kumkum, rice, milk, mishri, coconut, jaggery, fruits, etc. are made to the divine at the Surya Kund Temple. It is believed that Lord Surya is pleased when water, together with kumkum and mishri is presented to him.
