.Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India
The ancient Surajkund Dham is located at the confluence of Rivers Achiravati and Rohini, in the northwestern part of Gorakhpur. The temple stands amidst a majestic kund, surrounded by water on all sides. As per Puranic mythology, Lord Ram rested at this spot for a night. The next morning, he bathed in the holy kund and offered prayers to Lord Surya, the Sun God.
History of the temple
Gorakhpur’s Surajkund Dham entwines an interesting history. Valmiki Ramayan tells about the presence of a Surajkund in Treta Yug, named Karupath. It is believed that the present temple was built by Baba Muneshwar Das nearly 125 years ago. Dedicated to Lord Surya and Lord Vishnu, this is the most ancient of the 26 Surajkunds in India.
Significance of the temple
As per religious belief, devotees with a desire for parenthood are granted their wish when they offer true devotion to Lord Surya at this temple. Further, offerings of water made to Lord Surya also diminish the effects of Shani Dosh. Just like the 7 horses who run the chariot of Lord Surya, the temple contains 7 kunds which never get dry.
Architecture of the temple
Amidst a pool of water, the temple is constructed as per the Hindu style of architecture. The sanctum houses the idols of Lord Surya and Lord Vishnu. Once upon a time, the land around the temple was adorned with 52 temples but the count has reduced to 16 now.
