Baleshwar Temple is a popular tourist attraction for its religious and aesthetic beauty.

Manaskhand, Uttarakhand, India

Among the prominent temples in Champawat, the Baleshwar Temple holds significant historical and religious importance. It is located in the city of Champawat in Uttarakhand. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, covers an area of approximately 200 square metres. It is situated just a hundred metres away from the main bus stand in Champawat. The Baleshwar Temple is renowned as a beautiful religious tourism destination

History of the temple

The Baleshwar Temple, constructed by the rulers of the Chand dynasty, is a remarkable example of stone carving. There isn't a specific historical inscription that provides the exact date of the temple's construction, but it is believed to have been built in the 10th to 12th century. According to the stone inscription on the temple, its establishment took place in 1272 CE. Local legend suggests that during the time of the Mahabharata, Lord Shiva was worshipped here by Lord Bali for peace and prosperity, which is why it's named Baleshwar. It's also said that in 1420 CE, King Dhyan Chand initiated the renovation of the Baleshwar Temple as an act of penance for his father's sins. According to local folklore, this place was once a forest where villagers brought their cattle to graze. One day, a cow stopped giving milk. Upon investigating, the cow's owner was astonished to find a Shivling in the jungle. It's said that Lord Shiva had revealed the presence of the lingam to the cow owner in a dream. This event led to the construction of the temple.

Significance of the temple

The Baleshwar Temple is part of Uttarakhand's nationally protected heritage sites and holds special importance due to its historical significance. For the residents of Champawat, it represents unwavering faith. Grand celebrations take place at the temple during Mahashivratri and the month of Sawan. During these times, the temple witnesses a massive influx of devotees. Locals also start their New Year with a visit to the Baleshwar Temple. On January 1st, a grand procession is held here, along with community feasting. It is said that the trident placed atop the Gummad above the Baleshwar Temple rotates throughout the day in sync with the movement of the sun.

Architecture of the temple

The architecture of the Baleshwar Temple is incredibly attractive, with intricate stone carvings that are remarkable in themselves. The temple complex is constructed using stones, primarily of blue and green granite. The outer walls of the temple depict images of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and various deities. Besides the main temple, there are two other temples within the Baleshwar Temple complex, one dedicated to "Ratneshwar" and the other named "Champavati," dedicated to "Mother Durga." There are around half a dozen Shiva lingams within the temple complex. The main lingam in the temple is made of crystal and is renowned for its miraculous powers.
