Dev Surya Temple, also known as Deovark Surya Temple or simply Deovark, is located in Dev in Aurangabad district of Bihar and is dedicated to Lord Surya. This temple is unique because it faces west instead of east like most temples.
There is an interesting legend associated with this temple. King Ail of Satyug, who was suffering from leprosy, once came to the forests of Dev while hunting. Feeling thirsty, he drank water and bathed in a nearby pond. Miraculously, his leprosy was cured completely. This pond later became known as Surya Kund. After this divine event, King Ail had a dream in which he saw the Trimurti – Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh – in that same pond. The king then recovered the idols from the pond and started Surya worship and built this temple.
In this temple, the idol of Surya Dev is shown riding a chariot with seven horses and is present in three forms: Udayachal (morning Sun), Madhyachal (midday Sun), and Astachal (evening Sun). It is believed that no devotee returns empty-handed from this temple. After their wishes are fulfilled, devotees return during Chhath Puja in Kartik or Chaitra to offer Arghya to Surya Dev.
