Once, to test the virtue of Devi Anusuya, the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) came to Sage Atriās ashram in disguise and requested alms. Before recognizing them, Anusuya promised to serve them food. When the Trimurti demanded food, Anusuya transformed them into infants and fed them. When the sage returned, he saw that his wife had converted the gods into children. Upon praying to return them to their original forms, the Trimurti were pleased and blessed that they would be born as her son. Thus, Lord Dattatreya was born, considered the combined form of the Trimurti.
