Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped in Kali Yuga as the compassionate deity known in temple tradition as the divine form of Barbarika. Although Barbarika does not appear in the original Sanskrit Mahabharata, he is firmly rooted in Khatu Shyam folklore and Skanda Purana–based narratives, where he is described as the supremely devoted warrior whose sacrifice earned him the title “Haare Ka Sahara” - the One who supports those who feel defeated. 🚩 How did Barbarika become Shri Khatu Shyam?
According to Khatu Shyam temple tradition, Barbarika was a legendary warrior blessed with three infallible arrows and a vow that he would always support the weaker side in any battle. Seeing the potential consequences of this vow during the time of the Kurukshetra war, Bhagwan Shri Krishna visited him in disguise. Krishna understood that Barbarika’s power and his vow could affect the balance of dharma. To uphold righteousness, Krishna asked Barbarika for his head as a sacred offering. Barbarika accepted this divine request with devotion and offered his head without hesitation. Pleased by this supreme sacrifice, Krishna blessed him, saying that in Kali Yuga he would be worshipped as Shyam and that whoever remembered him with a true and sincere heart would have their wishes fulfilled.
