According to ancient legend, the right toe of Maa Sati fell here when Lord Shiva was performing the Tandava while carrying her body. Because of this, Kalighat is considered one of the holiest and most powerful Shaktipeeths.
The temple houses a fierce and unique form of Goddess Kali. In this form, Maa Kali is depicted standing on Lord Shiva’s chest, adorned with a garland of skulls, holding a sword and severed heads. A few skulls are tied around her waist. Her tongue protrudes outward, with drops of blood said to be dripping from it. Notably, the tongue of the idol is made of pure gold.
The present temple structure was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Datta. Construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. For centuries, this temple has been a major pilgrimage site where devotees come to seek fulfillment of their wishes.
