According to the scriptures, the worship of Maa Yamuna also pleases Lord Yama, as Maa Yamuna is the daughter of Surya Dev and the sister of Lord Yama, the god of death. According to legend, when Maa Yamuna began to flow on Earth as a river, her brother, Lord Yama, was made the ruler of the realm of death. On this occasion, Maa Yamuna celebrated the festival of Bhai Dooj with her brother, Lord Yama. Pleased with his sister's devotion and love, Lord Yama asked her to request a boon. Listening to her prayer, Lord Yama granted her the boon that anyone who takes a holy dip in the holy waters of the Yamuna or performs worship with devotion and proper rituals on its banks would not have to tread the path to Yamalok (the realm of death). Since Maa Yamuna is the sister of Lord Yama, the protector of ancestors and the god of death, taking a holy dip in her waters removes the fear of death and bestows the blessing of salvation. Therefore, on the auspicious occasion of Dashami Tithi during Pitru Paksha, the Pitru Dosh Shanti and Yam Dand Mukti Mahapuja will be organised at Shri Yamunotri Dham. Additionally, during Pitru Paksha, there is a tradition of performing acts of charity for ancestors. It is believed that offerings made during this time yield double the rewards. These offerings include Panch Bhog, lamp offerings (Deep Daan), and Ganga Aarti. The original temple is believed to have been constructed by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century, although some sources suggest it was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Over time, the temple has undergone several renovations due to damage from natural elements. According to legend, the Sage Asit Muni, who lived in the area and bathed daily in both the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers. In his old age, when he could no longer travel to Gangotri, a stream of the Ganges miraculously appeared near Yamunotri for him. Additionally, Goddess Yamuna is considered the daughter of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and the sister of Yama (the God of Death). Worshipping Yamuna is believed to please both the Sun God and Yama, offering devotees protection and blessings.
