It marks the end of Pitru Paksha, a time to free ourselves from old burdens. It is also widely believed that on this day, the divine presence of Maa Durga begins to fill the earth, signaling the start of Devi Paksha and preparing the world for Navratri.
The scriptures tell us that when the gods were helpless against the demon Mahishasura, they combined all their powers, creating a divine light that took the form of the Goddess. For this reason Mahalaya is a time of great spiritual power, marking the eve of Maa Durga’s arrival, when prayers to Devi Maa and her different forms are especially potent to remove darkness and bring new strength.
On this sacred day, we pray to four of the most powerful forms of the Divine Mother, the Mahavidyas. Their worship is believed to remove the deepest problems and give us the courage to face life, preparing our hearts for the blessings of Navratri.
