Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is the fourth Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva; it is considered a self-manifested (Swayambhu) lingam. It is located on an island named Mandhata or Shivpuri in the middle of the Narmada river in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Here the Jyotirlinga exists in two forms.
One of these is known by the name Mamleshwar and the other by the name Omkareshwar. Mamleshwar is located a short distance from Omkareshwar on the south bank of the Narmada. But despite being separate, they are counted as one. The jaap of Omkar first happened from the mouth of the creator Brahma. The start of Veda recitation also does not happen without Om.
It is believed that Mother Narmada also flows here in the shape of Om herself. According to scriptures, mere darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga grants freedom from all sins. The glory of the Omkareshwar area is also mentioned in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to mythological story, Bholenath comes here at night to sleep after traveling through the three worlds. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva-Parvati play Chaupar-Panse every day. Every day after the Shayan Aarti at night, Chaupar is laid out here and the sanctum sanctorum is closed.
It is a matter of wonder that inside the temple where even a bird cannot flap its wings during the night, every day the Chaupar pieces are found scattered. This fact further increases the religious importance of this temple.
This is the reason why after visiting all pilgrimages, the darshan and worship of Omkareshwar has special importance. Pilgrims bring water from all pilgrimages and offer it at Omkareshwar; only then are all pilgrimages considered complete, otherwise they are considered incomplete.
