Rahu Paithani Temple located in Uttarakhand is one of the selected temples of India where Rahu is worshipped. According to mythological story, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the body of demon Swarbhanu. During Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu sat in the row of gods and drank nectar through deceit, due to which Lord Vishnu separated his head from his torso with his Sudarshan Chakra so that he could not become immortal. However, due to tasting the nectar, Swarbhanu became immortal. The lower part of Swarbhanu's body became Ketu and the upper part with the head became Rahu.
This head part fell in Pauri district after being cut by the Sudarshan Chakra, where this temple is located and this is famous as Rahu Temple.
According to the belief here, people worship in this temple to get freedom from the defects arising due to Rahu. Especially, devotees perform puja here to get relief from Kaalsarp Dosh, Rahu-Ketu Dosh, and Rahu Mahadasha. In some stories, it is said that Adi Shankaracharya Ji got this temple built, while according to another story, the Pandavas built this temple during their Swargarohini Yatra so that they could get freedom from Rahu Dosh and could worship Lord Shiva and Rahu.
