A famous tale is associated with Lord Shri Krishna. It is said that to fulfill his wife Jambavati’s wish for a child, he observed a fast at this temple with a lit lamp and worshipped Lord Shiva. As a result of the worship, he was blessed with a son named ‘Swam’. Similarly, a childless couple once performed the same ritual and later were blessed with a child. According to the Shiva Mahimna Stotram, when a war broke out between the gods and demons and the gods began to lose, they sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised them to first worship Lord Shiva. He then accompanied the gods to the spot where Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple now stands and offered lotus flowers to Shiva. To test his devotion, Lord Shiva made one of the lotus flowers disappear. Lord Vishnu then decided to offer his own eye in place of the missing lotus. Pleased by this act of devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the Sudarshan Chakra. Steeped in devotion, history, and divine legends, this temple is still regarded as a major pilgrimage site for both spiritual upliftment and the fulfillment of worldly desires.
