Sita ki Rasoi

The holy kitchen of Goddess Sita

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India

Located northwest of the Shree Ram Janmbhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Sita Ki Rasoi stands at the junction of history and mythology. It is believed that this sacred spot was used as a kitchen place by Goddess Sita herself. Today, it has been turned into a temple, a part of which has been modeled into an ancient kitchen with the utensils of the olden times. The temple is visited by tourists from India and abroad.

History of the temple

The history of Sita Ki Rasoi takes us back to Treta Yug when a royal kitchen was constructed here, by King Dasrath. After her marriage with Lord Rama, Goddess Sita prepared food for her new family at this spot. It is also believed that Goddess Sita served food to five saints in this kitchen and became ‘Annapoorna’ for the entire universe.

Significance of the temple

Puranic mythology considers Goddess Sita to be an incarnation of the compassionate deity, Annapoorna. In continuance with this belief, it is important for all newlywed brides to visit this temple before preparing the first meals in their new homes. The darshan gifts the married woman with the blessings of Goddess Annapoorna and the divine being resides in her.

Architecture of the temple

Sita Ki Rasoi is a part of the fabled royal palace in Ayodhya. This building was styled as a kitchen during the Treta Yug. Today, the temple houses idols of Lord Rama and his three brothers, along with their wives, which have all been decorated with precious ornaments. It also contains earthen utensils, as symbols of its rich and glorified past.
