.Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India
Adding to the religious heritage of Indore, Gopal Mandir stands tall at the Bada Bazaar Chowk. The 190-year-old temple houses idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha, becoming a center of divine love and devotion. Apart from the main sanctum, the temple premises faced damage and depreciation in the past few years. Recently, the historic temple has been rebuilt and restored under the schemes of the smart city project.
History of the temple
Gopal Mandir was built by Krishnabai Holkar, the wife of Maharaja Yashwantrav Holkar, in 1832. She was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. It is said that the temple was built at a cost of 80 thousand rupees, in those times. Spread over an expanse of 1.25 acres, the temple is constructed of wood and stones. It also has shelter spots within its premises, made up of wood, stones and iron.
Significance of the temple
It is believed that darshan and prayers at the Gopal Temple take away all the burden of past misdoings and turn all wishes into reality. Only the fortunate get a chance for darshan at the temple, which is famed for its blessed environment. Vasant Panchami is the best day to visit the temple when a host of special ceremonies are observed here.
Architecture of the temple
The enticing architecture of Gopal Temple is one of its main attractions. Ornamented with marble, the temple is designed like a spiral, along the lines of the Maratha style of architecture. It has a big central hall with huge pillars. When the glass-made chandeliers are lit, the temple’s design amazes all the visitors. Within its sanctum sanctorum, the idol of Lord Krishna is placed on a marble platform, amidst silver-clad gates. The temple also houses idols of Lord Varun, Varah Avtar and Padmavati Lakshmi. The temple was renovated in 2022 and all norms of heritage conservation were followed in this process. The roof and walls were plastered with a mix of crushed bricks, lime, fenugreek seeds, pulse, jaggery and other such resources.
