Sankatmochan Temple

Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sankatmochan Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is one of the oldest temples in the country. Under the shade of a large peepal tree at this temple, Tulsidas wrote a part of the Ramcharitmanas. The temple celebrates Hanuman Jayanti on the full moon day of the Chaitra month in a grand manner. During this time, extensive music programs are organised at the temple, featuring renowned singers. Being one of the most famous Hanuman temples, the temple attracts more devotees on Tuesdays and Saturdays compared to other days.

History of the temple

Sankatmochan Hanuman Temple in Kashi is one of the oldest temples in the country. According to legends, the Sankat Mochan Temple of Kashi is nearly four hundred years old. Tulsi Das had a direct vision of Hanuman Ji here, and it was after that the construction of this temple took place between 1631 and 1680 AD. According to the Story of Sankatmochan Temple, at a time when Sant Tulsidas was suffering from unbearable pain in his hand during the last days of his life, he meditated on the form of Hanuman Mochan in this very temple and composed the "Hanuman Bahuk" hymn.

Significance of the temple

Tulsidas was a great devotee of Hanuman. Once, when he was in excruciating pain, he complained to Hanuman Ji, saying, "You remove the troubles of everyone, will you not alleviate my suffering?" After this incident, Tulsidas Ji, in a fit of anger, composed the "Hanuman Bahuk" hymn. According to legends, after writing this hymn, his pain disappeared on its own. People believe that by performing prayers and rituals in this temple, Hanuman Ji becomes pleased, and devotees are relieved from all kinds of fears.

Architecture of the temple

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple in Varanasi is surrounded by a small forest. The temple houses a magnificent idol of Lord Hanuman. It was here that the divine form of Hanuman appeared to Goswami Tulsidas during his penance and virtuous deeds. In this temple, Hanuman Ji blesses his devotees with his right hand while placing his left hand on his heart. The temple signifies faith and fearlessness, and as one enters its premises, a sense of positivity is felt.
