.Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India
Geeta Vatika is one of the most renowned temples of Gorakhpur, dedicated to Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha, the epitome of love in Hindu mythology. A prominent place for the worship of the divine couple, the temple attracts thousands of devotees from India and abroad. Evolving as a hub of spirituality, the temple has witnessed continuous Hari Sankirtan for the past 52 years.
History of the temple
Gorakhpur’s Geeta Vatika Temple was built by Sant Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar. Before the construction of the temple, the land was known as Goyandka Garden. It was purchased in 1933 and Sant Hanuman Prasad Poddar placed some sanctified idols within its premises in 1945. Thereafter, the temple became a magnetic place for the devotees, who offer their love and devotion to the divine here.
Significance of the temple
Geeta Vatika occupies a special place in the hearts of Krishna devotees. They are endowed with peace and spiritual bliss when they visit this temple. Hari Sankirtan, which has been running incessantly since Radha Ashtami in 1968, also attracts worshippers from India and abroad. What elevates the significance of the temple is the belief of the local residents, who say that Bhaiji was blessed darshan of Shree Hari Vishnu, Maharishi Narada and Maharishi Angira at this sacred spot.
Architecture of the temple
Geeta Vatika stands as an exquisite example of the traditional ‘Nagara style of architecture’ with 16 sanctums and 35 pinnacles. Along with Gods and Goddesses, the temple houses the idols of Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar and his wife, Ramdei Poddar. The ‘parikrama’ path at Geeta Vatika displays beautiful tableaus and exhibits based on Vedas, Upanishad and Shree Bhagavata Geeta. On the backside of the main temple, lies a sanctum with idols of Maharishi Narada and Maharishi Angira. Besides, the temple also includes the Samadhi of Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar.
