Chausath Yogini Temple is located in Mitawali village of Morena district, about 40 kilometers from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The temple houses 64 goddesses in the form of 64 stone idols, each having its distinct name. Apart from its significance as a place of worship, the Chausath Yogini Temple is renowned as an ancient tantric temple, considered a major centre for tantric practices and rituals. At one time, it was referred to as the "Tantric University." The Archaeological Survey of India has declared the Chausath Yogini Temple as an ancient and historical monument.

History of the temple

The Chausath Yogini Temple was constructed around the 10th century by the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. The temple stands atop a nearly 100-foot-high isolated hill. It has a circular layout with 64 small chambers within. The temple also features a fascinating and intricate interior design, adding to its mystique. Many curious visitors have compared the temple's architectural style to the Indian Parliament Building, as both share a circular shape. Some have speculated that the temple's architecture served as inspiration for the design of the Indian Parliament.

Architecture of the temple

The Chausath Yogini Temple is circular, with an external diameter of about 170 feet and houses 64 small chambers inside. The main central temple has slabs with openings to collect rainwater for massive underground storage. Visitors can reach the Chausath Yogini Temple after climbing around 200 stairs. The temple stands on 101 pillars, designed to withstand multiple earthquakes and remain stable.
