Each substance is offered while chanting specific verses that invoke different aspects of Lord Shiva's energy. There is a legend behind this ritual, which tells that Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. To please Lord Shiva, Kubera performed severe penance at this Jyotirlinga and installed a Shivling here. Pleased with Kubera's devotion, Lord Shiva made him the treasurer of the gods.
