The Mahabharata illustrates this truth beautifully. When the great Karna departed and reached heaven, he was offered gold and jewels instead of food. The gods said that although he had given generously in life, he had never offered food and water to his ancestors. Karna was then allowed to return to Earth for 15 days, during which he performed Shraddh and Tarpan to satisfy his ancestors. Since then, this period has been recognized as Pitru Paksha, the most auspicious time for the peace and liberation of departed souls.
With this sacred purpose, a special 15-day Pitru Dosha Shanti Mahapuja is being organized in Kashi. On the first day, learned priests will begin the rituals with a solemn vow in your name and lineage. The puja and rituals will then continue according to proper Vedic procedures over the following days. On the final day, Sarvapitru Amavasya, the ceremonies will conclude with proper immersion (visarjan).During this period, a grand Ganga Aarti will be held daily at Assi Ghat. It is believed that the light of the lamps along the Ganga and the sound of Vedic mantras reach the ancestors, bringing peace and fulfillment to their souls.
