According to a legendary story, Lord Indra, in his pride, decided to punish the Gwalas and Gopis severely. He sent heavy rainfall and a fierce storm upon the earth, which continued relentlessly for three days. Before this, Lord Krishna had instructed the Gwalas to stop worshipping Indra and instead worship the Govardhan Hill. Angered by this, Indra began the destructive rains. In response, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger and sheltered everyone under it. Seeing this divine act, Indra admitted his mistake, sought forgiveness from Lord Krishna, and bowed down to his divine form. After this incident, the tradition of celebrating Pongal began to express gratitude to nature, crops, and cows, instead of worshipping Indra. Therefore, on the auspicious occasion of Tamil New Year, the Mattu Pongal ritual will be conducted at the Etteluthu Perumal Temple.
