The Bhadrakali Temple in Kurukshetra is not an ordinary temple; it is one of the 51 sacred Shaktipeethas. It is believed that the right ankle of Devi Sati fell at this very spot, making the land extremely holy and filled with divine energy. Its history is also deeply connected to the Mahabharata. It is said that before the great war, Lord Shri Krishna himself guided the Pandavas to this temple. Here, they prayed with deep devotion to Maa Bhadrakali, seeking her blessings for victory against the forces of adharma (injustice). The horses for their chariots were also offered here for blessings, a tradition that continues even today.
This ancient story shows the immense power of praying at this Shaktipeeth. On the sacred day of Maha Saptami, when we worship Maa Kalratri, the fiercest form of Maa Durga who destroys all darkness, this puja becomes even more powerful. According to scriptures, when Lord Shiva, grief-stricken by Maa Sati’s death, wandered across the universe carrying her body, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into pieces to restore balance in the cosmos. It is believed that Maa Sati’s right ankle fell at this very spot, making it a powerful center for Shakti worship.
The temple is also deeply connected to the Mahabharata era. Before the great battle, the Pandavas, along with Lord Krishna, came here to worship Maa Bhadrakali and prayed for victory. After achieving success in the war, they expressed their gratitude by offering their horses to the Goddess. This tradition continues even today, where devotees offer silver, clay, or metal horses when their wishes are fulfilled.
This temple is also known for being the place where the mundan ceremony (first hair removal ritual) of Lord Krishna and Balram was performed.
