The origin of the Dasa Mahavidyas is a powerful story from our Puranas. It is said that Devi Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati, wished to attend a grand havan organised by her father. However, Daksha had not invited her and Bhagwan Shiva. When Bhagwan Shiva tried to stop Devi Sati from going, she became filled with divine anger. To show her supreme power, she manifested herself into ten different forms, each guarding one of the ten directions. Bhagwan Shiva could not escape her power. These ten goddesses from the fierce Maa Kali to the gentle Maa Kamala are the Mahavidyas, or the Great Wisdom Goddesses. Worshipping them together is a prayer to the complete, all-powerful form of the Adi Shakti.
