The idol of Maa Kali here depicts her fierce form: standing on Lord Shiva’s chest, wearing a garland of severed heads, holding weapons and skulls in her hands, with additional skulls tied at her waist. Her tongue is protruding with drops of blood falling from it. Remarkably, the tongue of the idol is made of gold.
The present structure of the temple was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta, with construction beginning in 1798 and completed in 1809.
