In Sanatana Dharma, Pitru Paksha is considered the most special time to remember our ancestors and offer gratitude to them. This period of 16 days is associated with the tradition of performing shraadh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan for the peace and satisfaction of the ancestors' souls. The most famous story related to the origin of Pitru Paksha is that of the great warrior Karna from the Mahabharata. When Karna attained martyrdom in the war and reached heaven, he was served gold and jewels instead of food. Lord Indra explained that throughout his life, he had donated gold but never donated food and water, nor had he performed shraadh and Tarpan for his ancestors. Hearing this, Karna expressed a desire to correct his mistake and was given the opportunity to return to Earth for 15 days.
During this period, Karna dutifully performed shraadh, Tarpan, and donated food and water for his ancestors. Since then, the tradition of observing these days as Pitru Paksha began, which is considered essential for the peace of the ancestors and the welfare of the descendants. Although every tithi of Pitru Paksha has its own significance, Ekadashi is considered particularly virtuous. It is believed that shraadh and charity performed on this day, which is associated with the worship of Lord Vishnu and Tarpan, can bring special peace and progress to the souls of the ancestors. It is believed that the Tarpan and charity performed on this day provide virtuous results for endless generations.
Therefore, on the Ekadashi of Pitru Paksha, special worship and rituals are organized in Gokarna. Gokarna, known as the Kashi of the South, is a very sacred place for performing ancestral rites. It is described in many texts, including the Skanda Purana, that the shraadh and Tarpan performed here are many times more fruitful than usual. Especially on the Ekadashi of Pitru Paksha, performing Pind Daan, Til Tarpan, Narayan Bali, and Tripindi shraadh in Gokarna is believed to bring divine satisfaction and salvation to the souls of the ancestors.
