Kalashtami is a significant day as it marks the manifestation of Lord Bhairav. It is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Bhairav, observed on the eighth lunar day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) every month. According to legend, to end Lord Brahma’s ego, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Kaal Bhairav and severed one of Brahma's heads. As a result, Kaal Bhairav was burdened with the sin of Brahma-hatya (killing of a Brahman) and wandered in penance with Brahma’s skull in His hand, seeking alms (Kapala Bhiksha). Eventually, the skull fell from His hand in Kashi, where He was freed from the sin. From that moment, Lord Shiva appointed Him as the guardian (Kotwal) of Kashi.
