Narada Muni told the king that his father was suffering in the land of Yama due to an unfulfilled fast in his past life. The father sent a message asking his son to observe the Indira Ekadashi fast, believing that his son’s act of devotion would free him from his suffering and help him reach heaven. Filled with love and devotion, King Indrasena promised to fast on this day with full faith, and through this, his father found peace and liberation.
Following the path shown in this story, performing these duties on Shraadh Ekadashi in the holy city of Kashi makes them even more powerful. Kashi, or Varanasi, is Lord Shiva's city, and it is believed that performing ancestral rites here helps souls attain moksha, or liberation.
