On this auspicious occasion of Ekadashi, three holy rituals are organized in Gaya, which include:
Gaya Tripindi Shraddh – In this, holy Pindas (rice balls) are made from sesame seeds, rice, and kusha grass and offered for three generations — father, paternal grandfather, and paternal great-grandfather. Its purpose is to satisfy the souls of the ancestors and may bring happiness, health, and stability to the family through their blessings. This ritual is considered a symbol of gratitude and respect towards the lineage.
Pind Daan – This ritual is performed for the peace of the ancestors' souls and the prosperity of the family. Pind Daan performed with faith and devotion is believed to be helpful in appeasing Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction). It is said that this may reduce obstacles in life and one may experience stability and contentment in the mind.
Til Tarpanam – This ritual, performed through sesame seeds, water, and holy mantras, is considered a means to remove negative energy and receive the grace of ancestors. This may transmit positive energy in the family and establish peace and balance in the environment.

According to the Garuda Purana, an Asura named Gaya attained immense power through rigorous penance and caused distress to the gods and humans. Then Lord Vishnu entered his body, calmed him, and made his body itself a holy land. For this reason, this place is considered extremely sacred for ancestral rituals and Shraddh ceremonies. The process of Tarpanam and Pind Daan, which has been going on since ancient times, is still continuing today on the Pindvedis (altars for Pind Daan) located near the holy land of Gaya.
According to the Skanda Purana, Dharmaraj Yudhisthira performed Pind Daan at the Dharmaranya Pindvedi for the peace of the souls and repentance of those killed during the Mahabharata war. Dharmaranya Vedi is counted among the Panchteerth Vedis (Five Holy Altars) in Hindu rites. It is believed that Pind Daan and Tripindi Shraddh at Dharmaranya Pindvedi have special significance.
