According to the Puranas, during the Mahabharata era, Bhim among the Pandavas found it extremely difficult to fast every month. He asked Maharishi Ved Vyas how he could receive the benefits of all Ekadashis without observing each one. Ved Vyas then advised him to observe Nirjala Ekadashi, a fast that involves complete abstinence from both food and water. Bhim followed the difficult fast and received the merits of all the Ekadashis combined. Thus, the day came to be known as ‘Bhim Ekadashi.’ It is believed that the spiritual power of this day is extraordinarily potent.
