Enraged by Brahma’s insulting words, Shiva created the fierce Bhairav from his own form. Baba Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head, leading to the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). To rid himself of this sin, Bhairav wandered the earth and eventually reached Kashi, where the skull fell from his hand, freeing him from the curse. Lord Shiva then proclaimed that Bhairav had conquered the cycle of time and would henceforth be known as Kaal Bhairav, the protector of Kashi. It is also believed that just like Baba Bhairav, his vehicle, the dog, also triumphed over time. According to legends, a dog protected the Pandavas and guided them to heaven. For this reason, it is considered that worshipping a dog on this auspicious day brings divine protection. Therefore on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, Kshetrapal Kaal Bhairav Vahan (Dog) Pujan and Kshetrapal Bhairav Ashtakam will be organised at Shri Kaal Bhairav Temple and Adi Kaal Bhairav Temple in Kashi. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav, who resides in Kashi, removes all sorrows, evil eye influences, disorders, and difficulties from one’s life.
