Prachin Surya Kund Temple in Ayodhya is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. The temple features a sacred water tank (Kund) where devotees perform rituals and offer prayers for health, prosperity, and relief from sins. Surrounded by calm natural beauty, this temple holds great mythological and spiritual importance and attracts pilgrims from across India who come to experience the divine radiance of Surya Dev and the serenity of Ayodhya’s sacred atmosphere.
Located near Darshan Nagar in Ayodhya, the Prachin Surya Kund Temple is one of the city's most important spiritual destinations. Also known as Ghoshark Teerth, the temple is built around the holy water pond Surya Kund, just 5 km away from the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple. This ancient temple holds deep religious significance and attracts many devotees.
According to Hindu mythology, during the coronation ceremony of Lord Ram, all the Gods and Goddesses came to Ayodhya. Lord Surya (Sun God) also attended the event and stayed for a month near Darshan Nagar, where the temple now stands. In the early 19th century, Shakdwipiya Brahmin King Shree Darshan Singh built the current temple and kund. He believed the kund held sacred waters and performed penance for seven days. On the seventh day, he heard a divine voice (Akashvani) that guided him to dig at the spot. He discovered an idol of Lord Surya riding a chariot of 7 horses, a Shivling, and a great treasure. He used the wealth to build this holy temple.
It is believed that taking a dip in the Surya Kund and offering "Arghya" (water mixed with kumkum and mishri) to Lord Surya brings blessings, removes all problems, and fulfills wishes. A famous story tells of King Ghosh, who was cured of a disease after bathing in the kund. Since then, many believe that the waters of Surya Kund can cure skin diseases and improve health. The temple becomes especially crowded during Makar Sankranti in January, when devotees gather to bathe in the kund and pray to Lord Surya.
The temple is built in traditional Hindu style, with a tapering peak. Below this peak lies the idol of Lord Surya, surrounded by statues made of Ashtadhatu (a sacred metal mix) of: Lord Shanidev (his son) Goddess Yamuna (his daughter) The temple also includes idols of: Lord Ram and Goddess Sita Lord Shiva and his family (Shiv Parivar) Lord Hanuman Shaligram (sacred stone form of Vishnu)
