Among the seven moksha-nagaris, Ayodhya's name comes first; the Atharvaveda calls Ayodhya the 'City of God'. The Skanda Purana, Ayodhya Mahatmya, states: "As Kashi is made sacred by the Ganga, so is Ayodhya by the Saryu. One who bathes in the Saryu is freed from the bond of birth and death." The Padma Purana: "Bathing in the Saryu equals the punya of 100 Ashwamedh Yagnas." When this city is itself mokshadayika, pitru karma performed here becomes a hundredfold more fruitful, through the power of Mokshapuri itself.

This is why the Saryu is a swayambhu teerth, flowing with Vishnu's own grace. It was in this same river that Ram took his final jal-samadhi.
