Harsiddhi Mata Mandir, located near the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Goddess Shakti. According to Hindu mythology, the temple marks the spot where the elbow of Goddess Sati fell. The presiding deity, Goddess Harsiddhi, is believed to bless devotees with strength, courage, and prosperity. The temple’s striking red-painted idols of Goddess Annapurna, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati stand beside the main idol of Harsiddhi Mata, representing power and abundance. The twin deep stambhs (lamp pillars), illuminated with hundreds of lamps during Navratri, create a mesmerizing spectacle. Harsiddhi Mata Mandir

Harsiddhi Mata Mandir is located in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. Famed as one of the most ancient temples in the city, it witnesses a range of ceremonies from Mundan Sanskar to weddings. An old temple of Goddess Rukmini Devi lies next to it, which is managed by the Archaeological Survey. The temple turns into a hub of celebrations on the Dashmis of Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris when the Goddess is adorned with a special Shringar and devotees are blessed with her portrayal in the Singhvasini form.

History of the Harsiddhi Mata Mandir

Harsiddhi Mata Mandir was established by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar on 21 March 1766. This region was ruled by her son, Shreemant Maleravji. Earlier, a stepwell was situated in front of the temple, where the idol of the deity was discovered. Besides the central goddesses, the temple also houses idols of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva.

Significance of the Harsiddhi Mata Mandir

It is believed that offering prayers at this temple prevents the occurrence of Chickenpox (colloquially known as ‘Mata’) amongst the worshippers. Additionally, the diverse Gods and Goddesses at this temple grant the wishes of the devotees and relieve them of all their problems.

Architecture of the Harsiddhi Mata Mandir

Built as per the Maratha style of architecture, the temple houses uniquely crafted figurines of Devi Harsiddhi, Devi Mahalakshmi and Devi Siddhidatri. The temple premises have been designed in accordance with Vastu Shastra. The idol of Goddess Harsiddhi presents the deity in the form of Mahishasura Mardini (the killer of the demon Mahishasura), with four arms. She carries a sword and a trident in her right hands and a bell and a skull in her left ones. Measuring 4 feet in height, the idol is made of marble and it is lit up by the sun's rays every morning. The eyes of the idol are very small, so Meenakar (shaped like a fish) eyes are affixed to it externally. Sourced from Nathdwara, these eyes are made with silver and embellished with silver. Notably, no chemical is used for attaching the eyes and they are stuck with the help of a fluid derived from the hive of honey bees. Further, the black-rock idol of Mahalakshmi is equally special. 2.5 feet in height, the statue presents the deity with nectar in one hand and a lotus in the other. The third idol, that of Goddess Siddhidatri, is very similar to Harsiddhi Mata’s idol and it is also made of marble.

Buses and autos are readily available at the station for easy access to the temple. By Road Harsiddhi Mata Mandir is 4 km from Sarwate Bus Stand, which is well-connected to all prominent districts of Madhya Pradesh. Both state-run and private buses are available frequently.
