The tale of Kalyani Devi finds a mention in multiple Puranas and chronicled manuscripts. As per the Puranic mythology, when Lord Shiva was insulted in the majestic Yagya performed by King Daksh, his consort Goddess Sati sacrificed her life. Fumed with anger, Shiva, the destroyer in the holy trinity started his mighty Tandav holding Sati’s corpse. To calm Lord Shiva and restore balance to the earth, Lord Shree Narayan cut Sati’s lifeless body with his chakra and her mortal remains fell at 51 places on Earth. One amongst these is the temple of Kalyani Devi, where three of Sati’s fingers fell. Further, Kalyani Devi finds a place in the Padma Purana and Brahma Vaivarta Purana. The first refers to her as Lalita Devi detailing her presence in the historic city of Prayagraj and the second mentions ]the story of Maharishi Yagyavalkya who had consecrated an idol of Goddess Kalyani Devi centuries ago. The thirteenth adhyay of Matsya Purana also talks about 108 peeths and Kalyani Devi is the first to be mentioned in this list. While the temple is enriched with numerous accounts of religious authenticity, it is the faith and devotion of visitors that heighten its significance.

Such is the importance of this temple that the area encircling it has been named the Kalyani Devi Mohalla. Mondays and Fridays witness special rituals and decorations here. During the Chaitra and Ashwin Navaratri, the temple surroundings turn into a hub of celebrations. Constructed on an elevated platform, the architecture of the temple is similar to the temples found in North India with a magnificent entry gate and a central sanctorum. What truly stands out are the idols placed in its sanctum, brimming with a divine aura and auspiciousness. It has three figurines, of Goddess Kalyani, Goddess Chhinnamasta and Lord Shiva, with his consort Goddess Parvati. Adding to the temple’s sanctity, the central space also includes idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and Lord Dattatreya. Besides, the presence of Ram Parivar in the temple magnifies the charm for the devotees. Given the vast number of deities that it houses, the temple pulls crowds of worshippers. The temple has undergone restoration and renovation in the last 20 years, with divine sculptures mapped across its walls.
