Ram Janardan Temple

The temple where Lord Ram has a beard!

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India

Ram Janardan Mandir is situated in the city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. The temple was constructed in the 17th century in the Ankapat region. It houses the temples of Lord Ram and Janardan (Vishnu). The temple offers the darshan of Lord Ram in his forest-dwelling form. The statues depict Lord Ram with a beard and moustache, while Mata Sita holds a water pot for watering the plants and a chavar (fan) in her other hand. The presence of several idols dating back to the 10th and 12th centuries suggests that this site has historical significance, possibly dating back to the time of the Paramara dynasty.

History of the temple

The construction of Ram Janardan Mandir was initiated during the 17th century by Raja Mirja Jayasingh. The intricately designed chariot-like structure of the temple is captivating. During the 18th century, the Maratha rulers added some structures to the temples, and the grand images on the temple walls enhance its beauty. The impressive sculptures of Govardhanadhari Krishna, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva showcase the magnificence of their architectural style and artistic excellence.

Significance of the temple

Ram Janardan Mandir houses a black stone idol of Lord Ram, making it the second temple in the country to have a black idol of Lord Ram, with another such idol at the Ram Mandir in Nashik. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar dynasty initiated the restoration of Ram Janardan Mandir.

Architecture of the temple

The temple houses paintings depicting scenes from the lives of Lord Ram and Krishna in the Maratha style of art. This temple serves as a beautiful example of Maratha art. During the Maratha rule, Ujjain became a meeting point for artists from Pune and Kangra styles of art. The influence of two distinct styles of art can be observed in architecture.
