Located in Sevrai village in the Bhadaura development block of Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, the Bada Mahadev Temple is an ancient Shiva temple that holds immense significance for devotees. This temple is spiritually famous, and it is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva here fulfills the wishes of devotees. People believe that praying at this temple brings peace, prosperity, and happiness to their lives. During the month of Sawan, the importance of worship and Rudrabhishek increases even more. Thousands of devotees gather at the temple during this time to pray for relief from suffering and for the fulfillment of their desires. Apart from its religious significance, this ancient temple also helps people maintain spiritual balance in their lives.

According to local beliefs, the Shivling at the Bada Mahadev Temple manifested naturally at this spot. Over time, as devotion grew, a grand temple was constructed around it. The temple was renovated in 1984 by a local devotee, Shyam Sundari Devi. Later in 2015, the temple complex was beautified with the help of the Tourism Department under the guidance of the then Tourism Minister, Om Prakash Singh. A popular legend is associated with this temple. It is said that in ancient times, British traders used to conduct business along the banks of the Ganga river. Once, a British trader’s boat became stuck near this place. The villagers suggested that if he built a Shiva temple here, Lord Mahadev would resolve his difficulties. The trader agreed but later forgot his promise. When he returned, his boat got stuck again at the same spot. Realizing the divine sign, he sent his son for trading and himself stayed back to construct the temple. After completing the temple, his boat never got stuck again, and since then, this temple has become an important center of faith.

The architecture of the Bada Mahadev Temple makes it especially unique. The temple faces south, which is extremely rare in India and is considered spiritually significant. The structure is built in a traditional Indian architectural style, reflecting ancient craftsmanship. A massive Peepal tree, nearly 100 years old, stands within the temple complex, adding to the spiritual ambiance. On the three main entrances of the temple, inscriptions written in Bangla script from the year 1754 can still be seen. These stone inscriptions highlight the temple’s ancient heritage. The walls and sanctum sanctorum are adorned with traditional stonework and artistic carvings, offering devotees a sense of peace and devotion. The architecture, history, and spiritual environment together make this temple one of the most prominent cultural and religious sites in Ghazipur.

The Bada Mahadev Temple in Sevrai village remains open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Special morning and evening aarti rituals are performed every day. Apart from regular worship, special rituals are conducted during important occasions such as Sawan Mondays and Maha Shivaratri. Devotees participate in Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek, and other sacred ceremonies on these auspicious days. Temple timings may vary during festivals or special events.

The temple has a special tradition for offering prasad. On regular days, devotees bring items such as bel leaves, flowers, incense, and lamps as offerings to Lord Shiva. On major festivals like Maha Shivaratri, Sawan Mondays, and other celebrations, grand Mahaprasad is distributed, including halwa, puri, kheer, chura, jaggery, fruits, and more.

By Train The nearest railway station is Ghazipur City Railway Station (GCT). It is well connected to major cities such as Varanasi, Lucknow, Patna, and Delhi. Daily trains run from Varanasi to Ghazipur, taking about 2–3 hours. Regular trains are also available from Bihar. From the railway station, the temple is about 15–20 minutes away by auto, e-rickshaw, or taxi. By Bus Ghazipur is well connected by road to many cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. UPSRTC and private buses operate regularly from Varanasi, Ballia, Mau, Azamgarh, Lucknow, and other cities. The temple is approximately 3–4 km from the Ghazipur bus stand and can be easily reached by auto or rickshaw. By Air Ghazipur does not have its own airport. From Varanasi Airport, one can reach Ghazipur in 2–3 hours by taxi or bus. Travelers arriving by air must take road transport from Varanasi or Patna to reach Ghazipur.
