This puja becomes even more special because it is performed on Matru Navami. This day, the ninth day of Pitru Paksha, is dedicated entirely to the mothers, grandmothers, and all the women of our family who are no longer with us. Performing their shraadh at Sita Kund in Dharmanya Vedi, the very place sanctified by the divine mother herself, is a beautiful way to honour their memory. The rituals are carefully done by priests at the sacred Dharmaranya Vedi in Gaya, following the ancient traditions. It is believed that when the shraadh is performed here on this specific day, the blessings of Maa Sita reach the souls of our female ancestors, giving them great peace and happiness.
A sacred day in Pitru Paksha dedicated to offering shraadh specifically for mothers and maternal ancestors referred as Matru Navmi. The holy land of Gaya holds a very special story about Maa Sita's devotion. When Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Maa Sita came here to perform the shraadh for their father, King Dasharatha, they needed some things for the puja. Lord Rama and Lakshmana went to arrange them, leaving Maa Sita waiting on the banks of the Falgu river. As time passed, the soul of King Dasharatha appeared and asked for the offering of 'pind daan' urgently. Seeing the urgency, Maa Sita, with great faith in her heart, decided to perform the ritual herself. She took sand from the riverbed, made 'pindas' (rice balls), and offered them. She asked the Falgu river, a cow, a Tulsi plant, a banyan tree, and a priest to be her witnesses. The place where she made this holy offering is now known as Sita Kund. It is a place filled with her divine love and is considered extremely powerful for ancestral rites.
By doing this sacred duty, devotees hope to free their female ancestors from the cycle of birth and death, helping them find peace, or 'moksha'. It is believed that when these souls are happy and satisfied, they look upon their families on Earth with love and shower them with blessings. This act of remembrance may help remove any 'Pitru Dosha' related to the female line and bring prosperity, good health, and harmony to the home. It is a heartfelt way to say "thank you" to the women who shaped our lives, ensuring their journey onward is peaceful and their blessings remain with us always.
