Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths in Hindu tradition and is considered a highly important pilgrimage site. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is regarded as the Goddess of power, energy, and destruction.
According to mythology, the toe of Goddess Sati’s right foot fell here when Lord Shiva was performing Tandava carrying her body. Because of this, this place is included among the sacred 51 Shaktipeeths. The temple houses a fierce form of Goddess Kali, where she is shown standing on Lord Shiva’s chest. She wears a garland of skulls, holds weapons and severed heads in her hands, and her tongue is shown extended. It is notable that the tongue of the idol is made of gold.
The present temple structure was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta. Construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. Kalighat Temple holds immense religious and cultural importance and has been a center of devotion for centuries.
