According to ancient legends, Sage Bhagirath performed intense penance to free his ancestors from their curse. Pleased by his severe penance, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth. However, her descent was so rapid that if she had fallen directly to Earth, it would have caused devastation and she would have ended up in the underworld. To prevent this disaster, Sage Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva. Consequently, Lord Shiva gathered Maa Ganga in his matted hair and Maa Ganga came to earth via Mount Kailash. This is why Lord Shiva is also known as Gangadhar. Hence, the Ganga ghats are not only known for bathing but also for worshipping Lord Shiva. Devotees pray, perform Aarti, and meditate at the Ganga ghats, seeking Lord Shiva's blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
