This temple of Shani Dev is located in Kosikalan, near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. According to ancient legends, when Lord Krishna was born in Brijmandal, all the deities came to see him. Among them was Shani Dev, but Mother Yashoda did not allow him to see Krishna. She feared that Shani Dev’s intense gaze might negatively affect the newborn Krishna. Disheartened, Shani Dev went to a forest near Nandgaon and began deep penance. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Krishna appeared before him.
It is believed that Krishna manifested in the form of a cuckoo (kokila) and granted darshan to Shani Dev. Krishna then blessed Shani Dev, telling him to reside at that very place. Because Krishna appeared in the form of a cuckoo, the forest came to be known as Kokilavan. It is believed that whoever worships Shani Dev at this temple also receives the blessings of Lord Krishna. Devotees say that those who sincerely please Shani Dev here are never harmed by him - their sorrows are removed.
