It is believed that the first utterance of “Om” came from the mouth of Lord Brahma, the creator. Even Vedic recitation begins with “Om.” According to belief, the Narmada River flows here in the shape of the sacred “ॐ” (Om). Scriptures state that merely having darshan of the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga grants freedom from all sins. According to legend, after traveling through the three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night. It is said that this is the only temple on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play a divine game of dice (chaupar) every night. After the night shayan aarti (ritual for sleep), the chaupar is laid out and the sanctum is closed. The astonishing part is that no one can enter the sanctum at night, yet the next morning, the dice are always found scattered - adding to the divine mystery of the temple.
