According to legend, in ancient times, Rishi Gautam and his wife Ahilya meditated on Brahmagiri Mountain. Due to Gautam’s spiritual power and fame, other sages became envious and falsely accused him of killing a cow. To atone for this sin, they asked Gautam to bring the Ganga River to that location. Since it was impossible for Ganga to come to Earth, Rishi Gautam established a Shiva Lingam there and began worshipping Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and asked Gautam to make a wish.
Rishi Gautam prayed to bring the Ganga to that place. Maa Ganga agreed but said she would only manifest there if Lord Shiva himself resided there. Lord Shiva accepted this condition and manifested as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. After this, Maa Ganga appeared in the form of the Godavari River, and Rishi Gautam was freed from his sin. For this reason, the Godavari is also called the Southern Ganga.
