According to legend, Kuber, the god of wealth, was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. To please Lord Shiva, Kuber performed rigorous penance at this Jyotirlinga and established a Shiva Linga here. Lord Shiva, pleased with Kuber's devotion, made him the treasurer of the gods. Additionally, the Shiva Purana states that if someone is facing debt-related problems or is unable to pay EMIs, performing a havan for Lord Shiva on Mondays during the month of Shravan is highly auspicious. According to a mythological story, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night after wandering through all the three worlds. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva and Parvati play the game of dice every night. After the Shayan Aarti at night, a dice board is set up here, and the Garbhgriha is closed. Surprisingly, even though no one can enter the temple at night, the dice are found scattered every day. This fact further enhances the religious significance of this temple.
